Where Are You?

by Arthur Schiff

I can see you are here -- it is clear
But -- where are you? -- are you near?

Where are you? -- why don't you stay?
I need you here -- why did you go away?

We've been together all these years.
Where are you? -- help me wipe my tears.

Whenever I looked into your eyes -- they shone.
Where are you? -- I feel so alone.

I try to keep busy -- and worry about you only.
But -- where are you? -- it gets so lonely.

It's almost like you are tied up with a rope.
Where are you? -- I'm trying so hard to cope.

Even with what is happening -- I'm sure there's a God above.
Where are you? -- I need your love.

by Arthur Schiff in June, 1993 for his wife Dorothy "Dina" Schiff who had Alzheimer's disease. Roughly 16 months later, Mr. Schiff wrote the following addition to his poem:

On Tuesday, October 18, 1994, God gave you a release.
Now, I know where you are -- rest in peace.
