The Tour de Canal is a challenging bike fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area Chapter that takes place along the scenic C&O Canal starting in Cumberland, MD and ending in Georgetown, Washington, DC. Riders may choose from three different distances:
- at 184 miles, the first ride is a grueling but fun two-day ride along the entire length of the canal
- the 100-mile ride is also a two-day ride, but allows for a more relaxed biking atmosphere
- and for those wanting to get in on the fun but who are not up to the task of the long rides we offer the 20-mile Family Fun Ride.
A free training program begins in the spring and continues throughout the summer to help prepare riders. Training rides are scheduled to alternate between Saturdays and Sundays. To participate in either the 184-mile ride or the 100-mile ride, riders must complete a 50-mile qualifying ride along the C&O Canal prior to the Tour de Canal. Riders do not have to be pre-registered for the Tour de Canal to take part in the training program or to participate in a qualifying ride.
2004 Tour de Canal
The 2004 event took place on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th, 2004. A record number of bikers - more than 200 - saddled up to ride along the C&O Canal and it's expected that the event will meet - or exceed - its goal of $160,000! "We were thrilled with the turnout and expect the event to gain even more momentum in the years to follow," said Jim McLean, Tour de Canal Chairman.
