Professional Training Programs






The Alzheimer's Association is committed to enhancing care and support for individuals with dementia. The demand is escalating for specially trained individuals to care for the burgeoning population with dementia. To support persons with dementia and their caregivers, and to promote the practice of person-centered care, the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area offers skill building training to long-term care organizations -- hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living, adult day centers, and home care agencies. If your staff interacts with people with dementia on a regular basis this is the training for you. These courses are designed for multi-disciplinary staff who interact with persons with dementia: Administrators, Nurses, Social Workers, Certified Nursing Assistants, Medication Aides, Direct Care Personnel, Activities Professionals, Food Service Personnel, Maintenance Personnel, Home Health Aides, Certified Medical Assistants, and Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapists.

All training emphasizes the team approach and provides a greater understanding of the causes of dementia, its progression, the needs of the people with dementia, the treatments currently available and the state of the art care interventions. All training offers a certificate of attendance at completion of the course. A list of the options for training follows:

Person Centered Care: Skill Building for Caregivers of People with Dementia
This enriched training provides a deeper understanding of cognitive impairment and the needs of individuals as they progress through the disease process. The format allows time for role-playing and interactive participation. Selected videos demonstrate care techniques and provide insight into the life of the person with dementia, the family, and caregivers. During the course of the training program, discussion is fostered and questions are welcomed. The course covers an overview of dementia, communicating with people with dementia, interventions for challenging behaviors, activities, the environment/safety, late stage and terminal care, and stresses and rewards of caregiving. A 103-page manual is provided to participants. 1.2 CEUs or 12 nursing contact hours are available. (This course meets the Virginia DSS requirements for staff of special needs units in assisted living.) This program can be delivered in 2 or 3 days.

Activity Based Alzheimer's Care Training
This Spring, Activity Professionals have two options for Activity Based Alzheimer's Care training. Developed by the Alzheimer's Association along with some of the nation's leading experts in dementia care, ABAC training will assist activity professionals in creating therapeutic, individualized activity programs in their long term care settings.

Participants will learn:

  • Effective assessment and care planning
  • Program design options and methods for implementation
  • Adaptation of activities and the environment to better meet participant needs
  • New tools to evaluate activity programs
  • Implementation of staff teamwork

Dementia Care Dynamics: Intermediate Skill Building for Caregivers of People with Dementia
This course is a condensation of the essential elements of Person Centered Care and can be delivered in one or two days. It is designed to teach staff the latest information on dementia and provide skills to help manage the day-to-day challenges of caregiving.

Special Care for Special Persons: Basic Skill Building for Caregivers of People with Cognitive Impairment
This course was designed for staff of special needs units in assisted living and covers the basics of information needed to care for people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias: overview of cognitive impairment, communicating with people with dementia, interventions for challenging behaviors, and the environment and safety. Meets Virginia DSS requirements for staff in assisted living special needs units.

4 hours
(Maximum number--30)
Individual fee: $40/person
Organizational fee: $500

Inservices/Consultations
The topics covered in the above courses can be delivered in segments of two hours ($300). An one hour inservice can be designed specifically to meet your needs ($125). A highly trained and experienced instructor delivers these programs.

2-hours or less: $300.00

All instructors for these courses have extensive experience caring for people with dementia and were selected for their knowledge and expertise in this field and trained by the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area.
